About The Onam Festival

Onam is a Hindu festival which originates from Kerala in India. It takes place annually during the month of Chingam (Aug/Sept) and celebrates the home-coming of mythological King Mahabali. The festival lasts ten days and includes much singing and dancing.

I took these photos at the Onam cultural celebrations at Papworth Everard Village Hall on Saturday 8 October while I was filming the event. It was a very friendly and happy occasion. I was particularly impressed with the colourful costumes and the graceful and expressive dancing. In one of the photos you can see the beautiful flower design (Pookalam), one of the traditions of Onam.
